During our training in Techiman we had the opportunity to go on several excursions to explore the local tourist attractions. We went on three excursions on three separate Sundays. First we went to Kintampo Falls, Fuller Falls and the "Center of Ghana." Then we went to Tano Sacred Grove. Finally we went to Kristo Boase Monastery which is very close to Tano Sacred Grove.
The water falls were nice but we were told repeatedly not to go in fresh water because of a diseases called schistosomiasis which is endemic in Ghana. Despite the warnings many of the PCT's took to the fresh clean water for a refreshing bath under the falls. The geographic center of Ghana was near where we were so we stopped for a look. The GPS coordinates, according to my Garmin Fortrex 101 GPS watch, are North 8 degrees, 2 feet, 55.0 inches; West 1 degree, 43 feet, 51.3 inches.
Tano Sacred Grove is a large rock formation in the Ghanaian landscape. The site has much cultural significance to the local people.
Kristo Boase Monastery is a Catholic monastery that is very nice. The monks take very good care of the place. There are a few British monks and many Ghanaian monks. They us a very nice tour of the grounds and served us a very nice western style lunch. The monks also had some mango, cashew, star fruit jams and some cashew gin for sale.
