Ghanaian Culture Ghanaians Markets Tro-tro's The Head Factor Small Boys/Girls

The Head Factor :

In Ghana people carry almost anything on their heads. While riding on a trotro or walking around the market there will be women and children selling food and water sachets on their heads. When there is a need to fetch water it is carried on the head. Fire wood is necessary to cook with and when it is brought from farm it is carried in a bundle on the head. Some more outrageous things that I have seen carried on a persons head are a part of an engine and live chickens. It is very common to see all types of food carried on heads. The trick to carrying something on your head is to have a rag between the item your carrying and your head. The rag also helps to create a more flat area no you head to balance the usually flat item you are carrying. Balance is not essential as you can use your hands to stabilize what you are carrying in necessary. If the item you are carrying is heavy you will need help putting it onto your head and taking it down. There is always someone willing to help though.
